Curriculum Details
We have two pathways for learning- Our Functional Academics Program and our Traditional Academics Program. Unique in approach, personalized for each class and both include the life skills and vocational aspects that define our school.
ACADEMICS
The H.E.A.R.T. Center was founded on the knowledge that kids excel in a recreational therapy environment and we believed there was a way we could turn that environment into a school.
We knew a traditional private school or charter school model wouldn't be the right fit. As soon as we learned about the diverse world of Micro Schools it was like the stars aligned and we couldn't wait to join this education movement.
We truly believe in functional academics. This is not a college-prep program–but instead, it's Life Prep. If we can empower our students to learn how to learn and to find joy in learning, they can do anything.
Functional Academic Pathway
Our micro-school began as a partnership with Prenda. Prenda provides such wonderful resources and access to academic learning tools for our students who are graduating with high school completion certificates with an emphasis on developing life and transition skills as their primary high school education.
Students work daily on their personalized academic program. Each day consists of individual core curriculum in the morning followed by group project based learning in the afternoon.
Learning plans and programs are adaptable to the individual student. The student determines the pace through personal learning goals and mastery of the subject matter.
Instead of letter grades, assessment is implicitly happening all of the time in the mastery-based system. However, the focus is on the learning process rather than the current state. Effort is celebrated and progress is rewarded.
Traditional Academic Pathway
You can go to school with horses and get a high school diploma. Our curriculum is aligned to Arizona State Standards and students on this path are enrolled in classes that meet their grade level just as they would be in a typical high school.
Students complete core academic instruction in the morning that is a hybrid of direct instruction and individualized practice. The afternoons are dedicated to group project based learning.
